BIOGRAPHY

You are what you repeatedly do.

For me, everything is techne. Techne is how we do, what we do, when we do, what we do. My work can be described as performance technology, or the study of how and what we do, and the ways we can refine, improve and grow.

I work with individuals, teams and large organizations to reveal beauty in their work. My approach works every time. Not because I know more than you, but because my skills and passion are dedicated to seeing the best in people places and things. I believe in exploration, I believe in action, and I believe in you.

WORK

SERVICE

Service is our highest calling. As an academic, I serve ideas, and society. My job is to explore questions, teach, mentor and inspire students, and to share my work with the public. As a citizen, I serve on committees and boards, and do pro-bono work based on my research and creative practice. Service is also the area I found the hardest to learn.

PROFESSIONAL

I love to share what I am able with an audience. From speaking engagements to group facilitation, I bring my understanding and experience in performance and technology...

RESEARCH

My research focuses on performance and technology. Tracing the word technology as it develops through the words techné, technology, technical, technique and information technology, I am interested in how we do, what we do, when we do, what we do. I work with performing artists, athletes, leaders, governments, companies, and anyone who is interested in improving performance. I am often asked how I got into this type of work. It took a lot of time, but it now seems like one long path.

TEACHING

I love teaching. Fall is my favourite season, and I still cannot sleep the night before the first day of classes. It is such an exciting time, filled with possibility and the promise of new ideas, new questions and the chance to meet new students. At the start of term, I say “Happy New Year,” to all the people I see in the halls. For me, the academic year is my calendar.
